The obituary of Matilda Uttley tells us that she and her husband Jonathan had three children that died as infants. Emma Maria was one of these three but the other two remain unknown. There are other family instances for the name Emma. The 1851 Census of Burgh St Peter in Norfolk tells us that Jonathan's older sister Eliza and her husband William A. Baley have a daughter Emma, age 5.

Life for Emma was short. The Burials index of St John's Church records:
ATTLEY, Emma Maria Age next birthday: 2 yrs Born: Elmira Buried: 7 November 1862 Minister: E.R. StimsonWe do not know where Emma was laid to rest. In Elmira would be the most likely.
Notes:
- Emma's birthday was the day after Matilda's. Emma died in the same month that James W. was born. A month of highs and lows for Jonathan's family.
